Great Museum for field trips
We toured the Museum for MLK Jr. day and learned a lot about African American history of the local area as well as throughout the country. Exhibits are very well put together and displays are interesting. The Museum Curator was a wealth of knowledge and very friendly.

A must see in downtown Decatur, IL
The African American Cultural and Genealogical Society Museum is located near downtown Decatur, IL. The museum is in a three story brick building (no elevator available) that has several small well organized exhibits that highlight important historical events that affected the lives of African Americans. Expect to take about an hour for a quick self-guided tour. However, if you have more time I recommend that you have a museum volunteers give the tour. We really enjoyed having the museum volunteer because he provided additional information about local African American history and the museum’s relationship with local schools. With an admission cost of $5.00, the museum is a great value.
