Don’t forget your camera on any tour of this very scenic area.
The Wadi or Valley of the Barada River entering Damascus is a must see sight! The old Damascus / Beirut Highway runs for many kilometers along side this famous river. In addition to the river you find the old Hejaz Railroad tracks and the Tora River all run through this famous Wadi. In addition many riverside restaurants are to be found within this long valley. When we were having breakfast at one of the many restaurants the old Train on the Hejaz tracks passed by making it a very interesting sight! A drive along the first stretch makes for a very relaxing tour of this famous Barada River Wadi. Don’t forget your camera on any tour of this very scenic area.

    Nice at winter
Barada is a small river coming from the mountains and emptying itself in the desert. On its way, it gives life to Damascus and the Al-Ghuta region. As such, it was praised by the Arab poets. Today, however, it is almost non-existent at summer. It fills in winter, though. Next to the Three Seasons hotel and later on, it has a big, nice, artificial, riverbed. Later on it is much more narrow, but has more water, which stays in one place and somewhat stinks. People would throw thrash in it, although the government tried to combat it, appealing to people to stop that. At night, the small houses rising directly from it close to the citadel are a nice sight. Apart from that, however, it is mostly a pitiful sight, sadly.
