Lowe Art Museum, Florida, United States

4.5 (102 reviews) Saturday: 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM Spent Ranking #6 in Coral Gables Art Museums

Great place to kill time waiting for your MIA flight to depart.

Impressive collection for a facility of this size! A Chihuly installation greets you in the lobby. I enjoyed the glass exhibit and the European pieces. The White exhibit is powerful! Clean bathrooms. Free admission, but they will start charging admission soon. Nearby parking spots, but you have to download an app or call a phone number and pay over the phone. Ridiculous…even for a college campus. Outdoor patio umbrella tables and trash cans. One frustration… much of the lovely European artwork is covered with glass. that is not non-reflective. Impossible to take pictures of, even though they are allowed.

Enjoying A Less Discovered South Florida Gem Again
The Lowe Art Museum on the bustling University of Miami Campus has been a source of delectation, since I moved to South Florida in 1979.The other day,I returned to this fine, small, currently free art museum and enjoyed its delightful glass creations again.Favorite glass creations that especially fascinated me were;Eric Markow and Thomas Norris'"Summer,Zenith,Kimono",Robin Grebe's"Edifice",Richard Jolley's"Blue Head With Flowers",Emily Brock's"Hotel Lobby",Christine Federighi's"Globe",Robet Arneson's"Nasal Flat",and Hank Murta Adams'"Spool".Dale Chihuly,Harvey Littleton,William Morris, and Janusz Walentynowicz were also well-represented in the Lowe Art Museum's Glass Pavillion. I was also fortunate enough to see its small, but quality collection of European Old Master Paintings on display. It was wonderful relishing these fine paintings again;Lippo Vanni's"Madonna and Child Enthroned With Donors and Saints Dominic and Elizabeth"(Late Medieval Italian, produced at time of Avignon Papacy),Guidoccio Cozzarelli's"Annunciation and Journey To Bethlehem(Italian Renaissance),Juisepe Ribera's"Saint Peter"(Spanish Mannerism),El Greco's"Feast In House of Simon"(Spanish Baroque),Adriean Isenbrant's"Madonna and Child With Hillenberger Family Member"(Netherlandish Renaissance),Jacob Jordaens'"Judgement of Paris"(Flemish Baroque),Giovanni Paolo Panini's"Capriccio of Classical Ruins With Healing Lame At Pool of Bethesda"(Italian Neoclassical)and Guisseppe Crespi's"Lady With Dog"(Italian Baroque). I also saw fine Contemporary works of Art by Pat Steir("Monk Ayko Meditating Waterfall"),Kehinde Wiley("3 Field Defense"),Frank Stella, and Samuel Jones'"Poplar Trees". Quality paintings by following painters were not on display, during my recent visit;Bacchiacca,Bernardino Fungai,Sophinisba Anguissola,Thomas Gainesborough,Claude Monet,Alfred Sisley,Paul Gauguin, and American David Park. The Lowe Art Museum is truly a less discovered South Florida treasure.

    EXCELLENT ARCHEOLOGICAL EXHIBITS
Limited days open and limited hours on those days. Parking available nearby. Not busy when I was here. I was able to use covid protocols by wearing a mask and not getting close to anyone. I'm into archeology and anthropology. I came here specifically for the exhibits about those areas of interest, especially of pre-Columbian civilizations and proples. And also of Mediterranean and African cultures.
