An art gem in Madrid

The Sorolla Museum preserves the original atmosphere of both home and study of the painter Joaquín Sorolla y Bastida (Valencia, 1863 - Cercedilla, 1923). It houses the richest collection of his works, colourful paintings irradiating light and vitality. It is one of the more complete and best preserved artist homes remaining in Europe. The garden, also designed by himself, is a beautiful oasis in the city.

    A Hidden Gem Worth Seeing
This is a small gem in Madrid! The museum is in the house and gardens of Joaquin Sorolla. He is one of Spain’s most premier artists. He focused mainly on portraits and landscapes. But this does not adequately describe his work. He was very concerned with light and how it influenced the perception and observation of his subject. He studied in Spain, Italy, and Paris. You can see some of his experiments with Impressionism. Mostly, he painted in his own style. I recommend getting the audio guide they have in a variety of languages. So glad we didn’t miss this,

    A Wonderfully Intimate Museum
What a delightful little museum! Perhaps Madrid's best kept secret. It's far more intimate than the city's other cultural attractions and, if I remember correctly, the entry fee was also very cheap. The house and grounds are gorgeous and Sorolla's art is deeply personal. There is something quite special about visiting this place. You inevitably go away, feeling like you've met the painter himself. He also has a gift for capturing the light. The fierce Spanish sun. It's quite unlike anything else I've come across. Although there's a lack of working class subject matter in his work (there are a few exceptions in his oeuvre, however), one can't deny that he does at least paint from the heart and with genuine affection. It's endearing, if nothing else, and I have to say, it did win me over. Highly recommended.
