Telluride Gondola is a must ride!

One of the most unique forms of public transportation connects Mountain Village to Telluride offering stunning 360-degree views of the San Juan Mountains that extend as far away as Utah. The gondola, the first and only free public transportation of its kind in the United States opened in 1996 and was initially built to help improve air quality while expanding the ski area. It is entirely free to commuters and sightseers. Since then, it has become a popular attraction for residents and visitors alike, giving them a stunning ride that caps out at 10,540 feet above sea level. Approximately 3 million passenger rides annually – and safely – and more than 50 million passenger trips have been provided since opening day. The gondola operates roughly 287 days each year with routine maintenance scheduled during our shoulder season months. It takes about 12 minutes to get from the Town of Telluride to Mountain Village Village. It takes 3 minutes from Mountain Village Center to Market Plaza.

    Great FREE ride for non-skiers.
A group of us skied at Telluride and the Gondola is part of the lift complex. If you are in ski gear a pass is required, BUT IF YOU ARE NOT A SKIER, YOU RIDE FREE! You can load at the Village Market, ride to the center Village station, walk to the next building (entrance on the right side), board the Gondola headed to San Sofia station and either exit at the top of the mountain or ride down to the town of Telluride. I first skied Telluride in 2014 and was so impressed with the scenery and gondola system that I returned with my wife in September for the autumn colors. As promised, the Gondola was free for us in September. If you have never been to Telluride you will not be able to imagine the fantastic scenery awaiting you. Telluride is an old mining town situated in a box canyon. Mountains tower above you from nearly every vantage point! The gondola system puts you in some of the best seats to view the mountains without expending much energy. Although my wife and I loved the gondola, the trip from San Sofia Station to town might challenge those have have fear of heights. One suggestion often overlooked - take the gondola to San Sofia station about 30 minutes before sunset. The sun will set just behind Wilson Peak (the mountain from the Coors Beer Can) and the entire valley will be bathed in a warm red glow. On a good night your will be rewarded with some of the most beautiful mountain scenery in the world.

    Cool Experience!
When I read about the gondolas it went on my "must do" list when we were traveling to Colorado. I am afraid of heights and do NOT do amusement park rides due to fear but for some reason this appealed to me! I'm so glad that I went up! The movement is slow and I think maybe only one time did I feel a slight stomach drop feeling while riding. The views are amazing! The gondola ride is free! If I had more time (we did this in the evening right before we were leaving Telluride) I probably would have gone up two or three times. I chose NOT to sit next to the door but in the middle of two people which helped me feel less fearful.
