Sprague Lake, Colorado, United States

4.5 (402 reviews) Spent Ranking #3 in Rocky Mountain National Park Bodies of Water

Very user friendly walk with everything wonderful RMNP has to offer in one stop!

This was my favorite hike in the park and I would consider us intermediate hikers. I felt like oh this is just a quick stop at sunrise but wow, was it wonderful. Super flat wide path around the lake so more of a walk but it had so many treasures. Parking super close, picnic area. The path meandered over streams, the lake view grew more spectacular with each new vantage point we walked counterclockwise and went to watch the sunrise. A momma moose and her calf were feeding, flowers, trees, Mountain View’s, sounds, smells, breezes. Everything you imagine National park to be in this walk that was very easy and would be great if not up for a hike.

    Nice Walk & Moose Sighting!
Our visit was April 11, 2022. This was a relatively easy walk around the lake on a paved path although half of it was covered with snow and ice making it more difficult. You can make the loop in 20-30 minutes or more depending on how long you want to stop and take in the scenery. I would recommend wearing appropriate footwear for the time of year you will be visiting - we wore hiking/snow boots and definitely needed them. The people in tennis shoes had wet soggy feet and nasty shoes. BONUS: we saw the moose! The moose wasn't at the lake but actually down the embankment on the road you drive in on to the parking lot. He was laying down and difficult to spot but we waited and he got up and walked toward the picnic tables at the exit and we followed along the road by car. We got to see him pretty well once we were near the picnic tables! Some other folks pulled up and several got out and went toward the moose ??‍♀️ these animals are very unpredictable and easily agitated - please keep your distance and be safe.
