    Water in the Sand
I will say I did not expect for us to see the creek in September based on previous reviews. However, due to rain within the last week of our visit, we did get to see flowing water in the sand. From the pictures, you can see that creek is broad but not particularly deep. We were in hiking shoes or boots and crossed easily without getting water in our shoes. It was interesting to watch the water as it moves with shifts in the sand. Returning to the parking lot you get great pictures from the creek of the dunefield. Again this is an added attraction that is truly seasonal so you may see it or you may not.

    Seasonal Treat
The Little Medano Creek is a seasonal feature that runs just in front of the dune field and is fed by the snow melt high up in the Sangre de Cristo mountains. The creek, which is particularly popular with children, reaches its peak flow late May to early June and tapers off to a trickle usually by July. By the time I visited in early October, the creek was bone dry, leaving behind a broad, flat, sandy wash but the presence of water supports a grove of tress that added a touch of autumn color to the sand dunes.
