Lake Isabelle, Colorado, United States

5.0 (25 reviews) Spent Ranking #2 in Ward Bodies of Water

Short, spectacular, and best mid-week...

This is a 2mi. (4mi round trip) hike along glacier lakes (Long Lake to Isabelle Lake) with only modest elevation climbs. Perfect for a quick morning or afternoon try-out. Once at Isabelle the hike around the lake includes a bit of bouldering and goat-skills, but the experience is just as wonderful from the initial entry.

    Beautiful hike
Parked at Brainard Lake parking lot and hiked to Lake Isabelle. This is a beautiful hike, with a bit of a climb at the end. Unfortunately it was overcast when we arrived at Lake Isabelle and so we didn't see it in all its glory (it had been sunny at Brainard Lake and so that was very beautiful) but it was still a worthwhile hike.

    You Must Take This Hike
At 10,300 feet, Brainard Lake is nestled high in the front range of the Rocky Mountains. The hike to Lake Isabelle is 3 to 3.5 miles (then the same distance back) depending on where you get to park (it gets crowded early on weekends and in the summer) with an elevation gain of about 1,200 feet. The path is well maintained and easy to follow. The views of Long Lake and Lake Isabelle are spectacular. You cross many mountain streams (on bridges or well-placed stones) and they are bounded by beautiful wild flowers. If you are in good condition you can hike on to the glacier or turn and climb to Pawnee Pass. Take a lunch and sit by the overflow at the east end of the lake. It is breathtaking. For a special treat, on your way down take the Jean Lunning trail around the south side of Long Lake. It is usually lightly traveled, quiet and very scenic!!!
