A nice quick trip to the island
While staying in Hiroshima we decided to visit Miyajima. We travelled to the ferry on the JR train service so just used our pass to go to the island on the ferry. A very smooth 10 minute crossing that got people on and off quickly, very busy both ways but the ferry’s are going continuously so never had to wait long. You get a great view of the massive red Tori Gate as you approach the island, The ferry company offer a great service

Frequent Ferries and covered with our JR Pass
We visited Miyajima on Saturday, December 28. It was super crowded even though the Torii Gate was under renovation and covered in scaffold. We were staying in Fukuoka. Prior to leaving the US, we bought the 7 Day JR Sanyo Sanin Northern Kyushu Pass for $200 per person. With this JR pass, we took the 1.5 hour Hello Kitty Shinkansen to Hiroshima. Then it was another 30 minute train ride to Miyajimaguchi station and a 10 minute ferry to Miyajima. All this was included with the JR Pass. The ferry goes back and forth. We did not have to wait long and the ferry was clean and had plenty of seating.

Smooth sailing ahead, captain.
If you have a JR train pass you may use it on the JR Ferry for free transport to Miyajima Island. The trip was around 10 minutes, quick and smooth. We were at the island during November of 2019. During this time they were doing repair work giant torii shrine so it was completely covered up.
