Tea Plantations, Chiang Rai Province, Thailand

4.5 (106 reviews) Spent Ranking #1 in Mae Salong Points of Interest & Landmarks

breathtaking!

Probably one of the most amazing places we visited in our self-made tour in Thailand. Here you get to know the habits of people from this Chinese corner in Northern Thailand. If you love tea - this place is a must! Unfortunately we had only the afternoon to walk around Mae Salong. It's worth a visit from the morning, so you can get back in the early afternoon without running (we lost the last bus to get back in Chiang Rai!). I suggest to choose a tea house and to visit the tea plantations and taste the different types of teas, the owners will be happy to explain everything about tea and to answer all your questions! Transport - we took public buses - it's easier if you have your own car, because from a certain time in the afternoon buses stop. It's not the easiest place to reach, so pay attention.

Recommended one day trip from Chiang Rai
the town, the small villages and the tea plantations are very interesting, not too "touristic". the MAe Salong visit can be easily combined with a visit to the royal Villa at Doi Tung in the same one day trip. and still leave two - three hours for atraction visit, perhaps the golden triangle, even though arriving to the golden triangle late afternoon will not allow enough time to visit the museum.

    Nice Stopover
If you're in Mae Salong or Doi Tung, do stop at the many tea plantations. Tea 101 has at least two centers, one of it is a tea processing hub. You can watch the workers shifting through the tea leaves and also see some of the machines that process the tea. If you're into tea, you can also buy the local tea to bring home. Walking along the rows of oolong tea is a nice experience and lots of photography opportunities!
