Black Kettle National Grassland, Oklahoma, United States

Quiet Camping in the Grasslands

If you want a quiet spot to camp the dispersed camping at Black Kettle Recreation area is perfect. About 4 miles of trails if you include walking between the 2 picnic areas. The top of the dam gives wonderful vistas. A few picnickers. Otherwise we were alone for 2 nights in our RV.

One of the BEST stops along our Route 66 Trip
This place ranks very high with a MUST see place for the entire family to visit. As both a retired Marine and retired school teacher, this place receives 5 Golden Apples or 5 Medal of Historic Awards...depending on which 'hat' I'm wearing at the moment. This appealed to me on every level as a learning experience and a lover of history and military lore. You can easily spend 2 to 3 hours simply reading and experiencing what is offered at this site. Please don't go in with a limited amount of time or you're going to fly past things that you're going to find very interesting. It's best to spend the quality time this site deserves and do it all justice. You're going to learn some things about our injustice to the Native Americans that you're not going to feel proud of, but we need to recognize all aspects of our culture in order to make sure some things never happen again. I found this place fascinating to say the least and I think you will as well.

This is a National park so we were prepared to use our Golden Ager cards but there is no charge. The museum is very well set up and the dioramas and displays are well done. The museum is located just above the actual site of the massacre on the Washita River and has a walking trail that lets you go down close to the site. There is also a short film made in 2003 that depicts the events without using any gruesome footage. There are interviews with some Cheyenne kin who were able to live through this tragedy. The few women and children not slain were
