River Dee, Cheshire, United Kingdom

4.5 (1.498 reviews) Spent Ranking #11 in Cheshire Bodies of Water

Attractive.

The Dee rises in the Welsh hills, flows through Chester and ends in the sea. A good stretch is navigable from the weir in Chester, for at least six miles towards it's source. The river does have a tide which usually stops at the weir but on exceptionally high tides, a handful of times per year, it actually flows over the weir and beyond. There are some interesting and spectacular bridges crossing the river. Much of the activity centres around The Groves, where organised boat trips can be taken, rowing boats and pedalos hired. There are a number of bars and eateries around this area. The Dee is also home to a number of famous old rowing clubs and there are many magnificent houses along it's banks. Parking on the riverside is limited and time restricted but the hop on - hop off sightseeing bus, stops here and there is an expensive NCP car park nearby. Toilet facilities are poor at the present time.

Evening birthday cruise on the River Dee in Chester
We had a superb evening birthday party cruise on the Mark Twain by Chester Boat Company. We invited 30 guests and had welcome fizz followed by an excellent buffet. and live entertainment. The boat was really comfortable and the cruise lasted 4 hours. The crew were excellent throughout the trip and could not have been more pleasant or attentive. We would certainly recommend this cruise as an excellent way of celebrating that special occasion at a reasonable cost

    Lovely river with nice views/amenaities
April 2021. We walked the approx 2 miles complete Roman City Wall and it passes the river, at the weir and Queens Park Bridge, Old Dee Bridge. If you come off at this point from the said city wall you have various amenities inc public toilets restaurants and concessionary stands adjacent to the river cruise piers. We then walked along the river passing under Grosvenor Bridge and around the racecourse. The river walk continues but we circled back, but a nice walk and views.
