A wonderful sneak peak into how villages used to like in Western Serbia
An open-air museum "Staro selo" (the Old Village) in Sirogojno portrays the traditional village architecture of the Zlatibor region. All facilities and household objects are authentic. In the museum workshops copies of museum exhibits are manufactured and also, the skill of potters, carpenters and other artisans is manifested.

Well preserved traditional log buildings
During our daily trip, we also visited the open-air museum (Ethno Village) called Staro Selo, established in 1979. It is located next to the much older church, dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul the Apostles. The village has about forty old, traditional houses, mostly log buildings. They were salvaged around this mountainous region, brought to this site and rebuilt with their original furniture and household items. For most of them, the name of the original owner, the date of the construction and the original location of the building is documented. Our guide explained to us in detail how these houses were built on a steep slope, where did they put the fireplace and how did they use some of the household items which look rather strange nowadays. Some of the houses have special thin roof tiles, made of slate rock, locally called škriljac. There are very interesting extensions of some houses which were used to store and preserve fruit and vegetables, mostly with smoke. There is also a reconstructed old village school. One of the building serves as an exhibition gallery for local artists and other cultural events can also be held there. The site is also a favourite spot for the motion picture industry. A number of old houses were adapted to accommodate lodging for tourists. In one of those adapted houses, there is a little restaurant serving local specialities.

Wonderful old village
In the village of Sirogojno there is an open-air museum "old village". Houses were brought from all parts of Zlatibor to be presented and preserved here. The museum has two parts. The first is a collection of houses that have preserved their original appearance and purpose, and they make up the museum's permanent exhibition. The second group consists of houses that have preserved their original appearance but have also been adapted to tourist needs. The museum offers Zlatibor dishes prepared in the traditional way.
