Red Square is a city square in Moscow, Russia. The buildings surrounding the Square are all significant: Nearby to the South is the elaborate brightly domed Saint Basil's Cathedral and the palaces and cathedrals of the Kremlin, Lenin's Mausoleum. On the Eastern side of the square is the GUM department store, and next to it the restored Kazan Cathedral.

    Historic and Awe Inspiring
There's a real sense of history, the massive square framed by Kremlin walls and GUM store, with St Basil's Cathedral at the far end and Lenin's Mauseleum. Its a huge space, containing a skating rink while we were there, but with huge wide open areas still available. There is sigificant security before entering and a lot of security in the square, but its not a problem. Make sure you have a guide book with you or have some knowledge of the square to ensure that you know what's where, what the various statues signify, and the general history of the square. Then its quite an awe inspiring place, and really should be the number one place to visit in Moscow. Allow an hour , depending on time of year and number of tourists, and depending on whether you are planning to visit inside St Basil's, Lenin's Mauseleum. And GUM is a great place for a pit stop.

    Extended festive treat
We visited in late February and were greeted by a very still going strong festive scene. Much to the enjoyment of our eldest little boy! Lots of stalls selling treasures, food and drinks and fairground rides for the little ones. Very clean and scenic.
