Nice Wayt to See The City
We waited for 20minutes to get on the Tram. You can purchase tickets from a ticketsaleman at the stop. Make sure you figure out where the tram stops so you enter it at the front. I tried at back and was first but door never opened. That was frustrating. Also, people were cutting in front of me at front of train and paying for a ticket, which defeated the purpose of pre buying a ticket. Tram is slow, so if you are in rush to get destination, Uber might be faster and even cheaper.

Tram 28 - cheap but underwhelming if you've already explored by foot
We decided to get on at the start of the route and go to the end - so a bit of a hike from our base to Cemiterio dos Prazeres then on to Martim Moniz by tram. The journey time was around 50 mins. We'd already seen much of the route as it happens so it wasn't particularly exciting. We'd toyed with the idea of doing it in reverse another day but that idea has been shelved - not much more to be gained from it. It's a pretty cheap way to see a bit of the city if you're not here for more than a few days but it gets very busy along the route - I would imagine it would be jammed in the summer.
