Great day out if you plan ahead

To beat the crowds, I prebooked the Pena Park and Moorish Castle tickets. We got a train from Rossio stn at 8.11 and sat at the front of the train so we were one of the first out. Turn immediately right to get the 434 bus. Everyone was sold a 11 euro hop on/off ticket (which seemed a rip off). We passed Moorish castle and got off at Pena at quarter to ten when it wasn’t v busy. This allowed us to take pictures at the Palace without too many people waiting also. The cafe was poor and the queues were enormous - I recommend bringing sandwiches. We didn’t bother going inside the palace which would require a timed ticket. The views from all the terraces were enough for us and were beautiful. We walked downhill to Moorish castle after lunch and it was fairly quiet. You could easily grab a sandwich and coffee here and sit in peace. The walls were beautiful and had some nice views back to Pena. We got the bus from Moorish castle ahead of the Pena crowds at the next stop and stayed on the bus to the station. There are some nice cafes near where we got the 434 bus. We got the train back at about twenty to 6. Pena is worth the visit but is about 2 hours in total unless you want to go around the enormous park as well. Moorish castle is also worth a visit. It seemed difficult to fit in much more than we did for the day so plan your time carefully and pack a picnic if you can.

All the Colors of Peña Palace
We took the train from Lisbon to Sintra for a day trip. When you get on the train in Lisbon, walk to the farthest train car to get on. It will be less crowded and this will help you when you arrive in Sintra. When you get into the train station at Sintra, exit the train car and walk to the right to exit and find the buses into Sintra. The bus driver will sell you a ticket for the bus. The ticket is a slip of paper receipt DO NOT LOOSE it since the bus ride is a hop on and off. We skipped the first stop for the Moorish Castle since we knew we would not have time to do everything. Therefore, we stayed on the bus and got off at the Peña Palace stop. There, you will have to stand in line to purchase tickets to the Peña Palace and the tram ride up to it. It is very steep so I recommend riding the tram bus. The outside grounds are beautiful and there are many wonderful photo spots as the Peña Palace is gorgeous. Your ticket to the Peña Palace is a timed entry so you want to make sure you enter at the correct time. Inside, the palace rooms are beautiful and I highly recommend touring the inside. There is a restaurant there…it is NOT good. It is more like a cafeteria at a school. I would recommend bringing your own snacks with you on a day trip to Sintra and then make sure to eat at one of the great restaurants in the town of Sintra. By bringing some snacks and water with you, you do not waste time or money while touring the sites and then you will have time to enjoy a wonderful meal in the town of Sintra.
