Museu Nacional de Machado de Castro, Central Portugal, Portugal

4.5 (679 reviews) Sunday: 10:00 AM - 6:00 PM Spent Ranking #2 in Coimbra District Speciality Museums

Fantastic Experience

The external view of this museum is best described as unassuming. However, when you enter the museum you will understand that the museum has had to protect its 2000 years of history in a special way. Starting from the Roman base the museum reflects the importance of Coimbra through the Visigoth-Suevi, Moorish and late medieval periods. The exchanges of the Portuguese Empire are also represented. The museum includes stone and wood carvings, textiles, glass and ceramics, gold and silver work and wonderful paintings.

    Mostly interesting
The museum is well done and was a bit over priced in my opinion but I have seen many Roman ruins before and frankly religious artwork just doesn't interest me. So that probably influences my review However there were some very lovely pieces, and I enjoyed most of the museum. It is very specific to the area but had some breadth to it as well. I'm glad I went in and saw everything (even if it was a quick glance as I walked by).

    Favorite spot in Coimbra
We spent about 3 hours here (which includes taking lots of pictures) and could have easily spent more time browsing everything. The Roman ruins are fascinating, sculptures/paintings are beautiful, and altarpieces quite unique. The audio guide provides a lot of information in English, and there's a decent collection of furniture as well.
