Fado music, oh Fado music...

Home to art galleries and a historic monastery (Convento do Carmo), Bairro Alto is one of the busiest districts of Lisbon after dark. Locals and travelers pack its narrow streets to hang out outside the area’s countless bars. Try ginjinha, a local liqueur, as you listen to live fado music. During the day, you can stroll through the neighborhood's narrow streets and check out the quaint boutiques and cafes. To get to Bairro Alto, take the eye-catching Glória Funicular at Liberdade Avenue. It’ll drop you off at the São Pedro de Alcântara viewpoint, where you'll get commanding views of the city. – Tripadvisor

    Unmissable historic district of Lisbon
This historic district stands on one of the hills of Lisbon and is characterized by narrow and regular streets along which it is a pleasure to stroll. You cannot visit Lisbon without going to Alfama and Bairro Alto, it would be a visit that completely cut the history, folklore and liveliness of this city. In addition to walking along the streets that climb up this area, you can get to Bairro Alto by taking the fun, historic and often very crowded tram 28 or the Ascensor da Bica, a vintage funicular railway line about 250 m long that goes up from Rua de S. Paulo to Largo Calhariz or even using the Elevador da Gloria, a vintage funicular tramway. Using one of these historic vehicles represents an ideal introduction to the environment that you are going to visit and where, in addition to the pleasure of walking and stopping in some places, stand out the church of San Rocco, with its eight very richly decorated chapels, and the Miradouro Sao Pedro de Alcantara, from which you can enjoy a suggestive view of the Castelo de S. Jorge. Bairro Alto is no doubt one of the most interesting areas of Lisbon.

Nice Old Part of the City
We stayed in a roof apartment in this area. very quiet during the day but come the evening the place just comes alive and is full of young locals and tourist. Food is expensive in some of the small restaurants and sitting on wobbly tables on cobbles little fun. If you do want to stay there it can be very noise until very late on a Saturday night, mainly as noise travels in these small alleyways.
