Røros Museum Olav's Mine, Central Norway, Norway

4.5 (144 reviews) Spent Ranking #3 in Central Norway Speciality Museums

Well worth a stop.

This is a very interesting part of Norwegian history, especially between Sweden & Norway. Also, explains the conflicts between the workers and owners at this time.

    Surprisingly interesting
The thought of descending into a cold, damp old mine for 1-1/4 hours was not my idea but my partner was keen. The tour turned out to be informative and full of interesting highlights that gave us a real sense of the daily lives and work of the men who mined the copper ore during 10 hour shifts. Our guide Øyvind was terrific! We had several young kids and a few seniors in the group. He gave us clear instructions beforehand about safety (we all wore helmets), steepness of walkways and when best to take pictures. He spoke clear, good English. The mine tour is a must-see if one is to understand the history of Røros. Wear good walking shoes, jeans that you don't mind getting muddy and warm clothes (it's a chilly 4-5 Celcius in the mine). A caution - the village does not offer public transport to the mine which is 13 km out of Røros. Maybe they'll remedy this shortcoming in future. To complete the picture on the mining history of this area, go also to Røros Museum in town to learn about copper smelting that took place in the heart of the village by the river. A combination ticket for museum and mine is cheaper than separate admissions.
