Fascinating look at history of Nidaros Cathedral site

The many artifacts in this museum, most excavated on the grounds in and around the cathedral, tell the story of the site throughout its history. We were fascinated by the many sculptures and items found on the site, especially the old mint. Everything is displayed well with good explanations (in Norwegian and English) of the history and significance of the items.

    Beautifully presented and accessible history
The cathedral, which was pretty much gutted by fire and then left to rot for many years, has been very successfully restored and this museum houses the original artefacts from the cathedral. These include many stone carvings, but also a coin mint workshop and models of how the cathedral expanded and contracted over time. First of all however do watch the wonderful film which is downstairs, it makes a great introduction to the rest of the museum, we were advised to do this and it really works well.

    Museum next to cathedral
This interesting museum contains medieval artefacts from what was the Archbishop's palace prior to the reformation. There are also archaeological remains including of a mint. The exhibits are fascinating and housed in a beautiful building which is part of a quadrangle including the army museum, and the repository for the Norwegian crown jewels.
