Laguna de la Media Luna, Central Mexico and Gulf Coast, Mexico

4.5 (248 reviews) Spent Ranking #1 in San Luis Potosi Bodies of Water

Media luna

The camping area is $150 pesos a night which is about $10 dollars. Entrance to park is $100 pesos. The camping area is located outside of the entrance but you have access to restrooms and showers etc. They also have cabins that you can rent which are inside the park. Inside the park they have vendors that serve breakfast and lunch food and you can also rent a tent, inflatable mattress, life jackets, wood, small grill. You must arrive early before closing so you can rent the items you need. If you are a light sleeper I recommend taking ear plugs if you are staying in the camping area because People will arrive and party all night and take lights because it is very dark. The cabins are on the inside of the park. The water is beautiful here and crystal clear. For the camping area you can just arrive and set up your tent then at night someone from the park will collect the fee for the tent. Cabins I would recommend calling first.

    Great Diving
This is my favoite place to scuba dive. The visibility is always around 40 feet or more. It is a safe place to drive to from the US border; I did it 5 times last year. When you are about 2 miles out of town from SLP, look for the road to Media Luna. There is an outstanding PADI dive shop right on the corner when you make the turn. Ask for Ossiel, he owns and operates the shop. He has clean air and all the equipment you will need. You can camp at Media luna, it is safe and well protected. There are plenty of snack shops at the park with great local foods. The lake reaches 118 feet deep. If it is your first time there, I suggest asking Ossiel to guide you, he can show you all the interesting things in the lake to include an underwater petrified forest. A great place to eat is located in the nearby town of Rio Verde, it is called La Cabana, located on HWY 70 just before you get to the main city on the right hand side. This is a great place to learn how to dive - Ossiel is a Master Scuba Instructor and has a great team of instructors - plus he speaks very good english. There are about 9 species of fish in the lake and some huge crayfish. For more information or planning, go to Buceomedialuna.com.Oh yea, the water stays 82 degrees F all year long. You can camp at Ossiels dive shop if you want, that is the cheapest way to visit. Clean restrooms are available and there is a restaurant next door. Media Luna is a family friendly site but no dogs are allowed in the park. No RV spots are available. You will find restrooms with showers and changing facilities at the park. It is located about 630 miles from San Antonio and the drive down there takes around 12 hours; almost entierly on safe toll roads. If you go, have fun and prepare to make friends for life.

    Beautiful ! Relaxing ! Unique !
La Laguna de media luna is really beautiful. To go there, it's better to have a SUV or 4x4 especially in October. Sometimes it's raining and the street to media Luna ( which is a dirt road) can become a challenge. There you can have breakfast and simple meals. You must go there and snorkel. The crystal clear water us warm and relaxing ! It's a 4-6 hour event .
