An Integral Part of the History of Mexico
Having drifted away from being a part of any organized religion, I really had no intention of visiting the Basilica. However, we stopped here as part of a tour to Teotihuacan and I'm really glad we did. The history of the Basilica which includes both the current modern building and the more historic churches that are all a part of the same complex is quite fascinating. The story of Guadelupe is also an integral part of Mexican history and identity making this an important part of a visit to Mexico City. Seeing those here not as tourists but making a true pilgrimage to this sacred site was quite moving.

Pilgrimage - Bucket List
The importance of this place for a Catholic is hard to put into words. Seeing in person the location where Mary appeared to St. Juan Diego was a spiritual experience. The organization of the Basilica is to be commended. Pilgrims can see the Tilma of Juan Diego via a moving walkway under the main altar, without disturbing the Mass and worship from the main space in the church. We marveled at the sight of the Tilma many times in our visit. Also on the site is the original Basilica, which is now closed due to safety concerns, but still marvelous to view on the outside. The main square is a large gathering space, that reminds me of St. Peter's square in Rome. Not to missed is the hike to the top of Tepeyac Hill, where the apparition of Mary to Juan Diego occurred. There is a church at the top, where one will find amazing views of the Basilica complex and Mexico City. This place is a treasure, so happy we got to see it in person.
