Lake Vegoritida, Central Macedonia, Greece

Spectacular gem, off the beaten track...

Leaving Macedonia and crossing into Northern Greece en route to Thessaloniki, we checked our map and detoured from the E-65/E-86 Florina - Edessa highway to check out yet another spectacular lake. This time it was Lake Vegoritida, a pretty deep body of water, evidenced by its dark blue hue. Bracketed by steep slopes and rocky hills, it is not visible from the highway and we wended our way along the rudimentary road to the rural village of Peraja, sited on the cliff-side, overlooking the Lake and its unsurpassed tranquil vistas. A hugely impressive cross has been erected by the members of the tiny Greek Orthodox chapel sharing the site, but the biting wind quickly obliged us to retreat to the attractive and warm confines of the adjacent, somewhat unlikely Cafe-bar. Obviously popular as a meeting-place for the local village residents, it is presided over by the charming owner, Maria, who explained that she tried to keep the facility open throughout the year. Fellow-travelers: take note! A spectacular whistle-stop on your way across country...
