Čakovec Castle, Central Croatia, Croatia

4.0 (36 reviews) Spent Ranking #1 in Medimurje County Castles

13th C traditional Castle with 1738 rebuilt interior castle-museum.

The interior Baroque castle museum was free with the 1st floor devoted to farm tools, costumes, household furniture and a loom. The 2nd floor told the Zrinski family history(1546-1691) with many descriptions in English, family tree, costumes, hunting weapons and culinary information. Very worthwhile.

Surprisingly nice and so far for me hidden place
Several years driving over ten hour down to the see and so back the same during summer time the decision to split the journey came and it was very good idea and the most probably the best choice for staying is Cakovec. Small but cute city close to the Croatia/Hungary boarder with nice historical castle Zrinski. I didn't expect anything like this, so no castle visit was planed, event to that there was some kind of wine festival, that's why for now I have some experience just from outside, nevertheless the expression is very good. I can't wait for next visit, this time with castle excursion.

Nice Castle in a Beautiful Town
I have been visiting Cakovec now for almost ten years. I first visited in 2005 and will keep going there every year, after all, my fiance lives there. Every year the town gets nicer to me, I prefer to live in a small, well-knit close community and one with a lot of nice bakeries. In addition to all this, there is a nice Castle there, I like to call it The Fortress. In 2005 I had my first Tour of the Castle and while the tour was limited due to construction and the weakened overall state of the Castle, I still found it fascinating and a nice place to visit. There are many different exhibits and lots of old photos. The best part of the Fortress is the Fortress itself. Not sure how the inside is now, I will look more on my next visit in December and follow up with this review. A month ago when i visited Cakovec I did a quick walk around the Fortress and all seems well but I did not look to see if there was a tour. If you plan on visiting one day, please call the Cakovec Tourist office and confirm there is a tour. My last visit was nice because the town was having their yearly summer festival and the whole downtown area and the Fortress was lit up, the whole town was beautiful. Should you happen to be passing through that area, make a stop for several hour hours, view the Fortress and see the town. Stop for a coffee and a cake in the downtown area. Cakovec is small town/community that breathes good vibrations. It's not a place loaded with spectacular points of interest and new foodie destinations. But it reminds all of us of what home should be...and why one visit will remind you of home...and please, carry the spirit of Cakovec back home with you. One final note. I lived in Davis, California for 4+ years in college...Cakovec is a lot like Davis except that Davis has become too, too commercialized. If you have lived in Davis and visit Cakovec, you'll feel the same "home" feeling. Good luck with all your travels and travel safe.
