Best visit in town for us, recent Spanish history bought to life

Overlooking the city, it is an imposing military fort used by Franco throughout his time in power and as a fort up to 1950s, handed over by military only recently. Take the metro up to the cable car, worth taking to the top and walk diwn if the weather is good. Free entry first Sunday of the month and make sure to book the English language tour which goes into areas only recently revealed.

    Beautiful day out
The Montjuic hill and its park are so way more than the magic fountain many here are only writing about. The park comprises a huge area in the southwestern part of town. You can access it by car with several free parking lots around (and some paying). If you don't have a car the best and most scenic way is by the cable car. Once up, there's so much to explore: The Monjuic Castle - nice fortress with city views, Botanical gardens, old Monjuic cemetery, Joan Miro museum, Poble Espanol outdoor exhibition, National musuem of Catalonia (MNAC), the Olympic Stadium, cascade fountains including the magic fountain. Some of these attractions are free, some are paying so decide yourself, but for sure you'll need at least half day for your visit.

    Bus up, walk down
We travelled up by bus from Pl Espanya. Its the 150 (saying something along the lines of Castell Montjuic on the front) which you get from outside the tourist booth. We used our T-Casual cards which also work on the metro etc. The card machine is not the one as you get on the bus, you need to pass the driver and you will see it on the right part way down the aisle. Great, windy drive up to the top, with lots of great views. Your last stop is a handful of steps up to the castle. We then decided to walk down, a bit of a challenge at times due to lack of helpful signposts! There are brown signs for things like the Botanical gardens (which we visited), road signs, and a bit of guess work! Also some lamp posts did have maps which saved the day a couple of times! If you walk please go through Jardin Laribel which is absolutely stunning in the Spring. Flowers, wisteria, a waterfall, trees in full blossom - just gorgeous (and free!). After a good wander with stops on the way we got back down to the magic fountain having thoroughly enjoyed getting away from the city. Not many places to eat or drink though, so bring supplies. In the Botanical gardens there were vending machines in the entrance, but no café! (They are missing a trick there)
