Spectacular situation between land and sea
I can see why this is the most visited site in Tarragona. Interesting ruins and a good audio guide. There is something special about the situation so close to the sea. Ask about a ‘combination’ ticket if you are visiting other historical sites in Tarragona. I only found out about this later as it was not mentioned by the staff. A new access is being constructed which looks as if it will give a spectacular approach to the amphitheater. A good way to get a bird’s eye view of the site is to visit the rooftop bar of the nearby Imperial Tarraco hotel.

Wonderful legacy by the sea
Close to the train station and lovely by the sea it’s a marvellous legacy from almost two millennia ago. Constructed in the 2nd century CE to stage gladiatorial spectacles it is outstanding in its preservation. Great sweeps of stone seating rows are to be seen, but they are cordoned off so not possible to enter and actually experience sitting on them. At its apogee it could seat about 14000 spectators for the bloody spectacles and games. In the 3rd century it became Christianised and a seminal event happened within the arena in 259 when Bishop Fructuosus and his Deacons were martyred by burning at the stake. Cemeteries from the Visigoth and medieval eras are outlined. Also some walls of a 6th century Basilica are great to see. Later a Romanesque church was placed here in the 12th century. So it has had a long and varied storied history.
