Universidad de Valladolid (UVA), Castile and Leon, Spain

Two phenomenal buildings at the University of Valladolid!

Though it’s easy (and understandable) to get caught up in the excellent shops, restaurants, cafes, parks, and museums of Valladolid, be sure to devote time to some of the buildings of its historic university, which is one of the oldest in Europe. One of the primary central buildings, which is illuminated at night, has an intricate Baroque facade and an interior decorated with colorful Spanish tiles and sporting a grand staircase. Another significant edifice, not too far away, houses the historic library of Santa Cruz upstairs and a serenely beautiful cloister at its center. If you need help finding these spaces, just ask one of the many passing students!

    Amazing Staircase
I love to go through open doors to see what I find. I went into this university knowing nothing of it, and came out very impressed by the visit.

    Wonderful Facade
The University of Valladolid was started as a small school in the 13th century. However in 1346 Pope Clement VI converted it into a university. A building was constructed at the end of the 15th century during the reign of the Catholic Kings. The building was augmented in the 16th century and reformed in the 18th century. The facade is monumental and has the style of the most opulent and decorative Baroque. It is made of stone. Fray Pedro de la Visitacion worked on the facade, with the sculptor Antonio Tome and his sons Narciso and Diego. There are two floors and the main entrance is very elaborate with two large Corinthian columns on each side of the door. The statue of Theology is in the center of the facade, in the niche on top of the portal, flanked by coats of arms of the King and one of the University. In the side niches are sculptures of Rhetoric, Geometry, Canon Science, and Legal Science. In the center niche there is Learning stepping on ignorance. On top of the columns are statues of Astrology, Medicine, Philosophy, and History. The building's last remodeling took place in 1968.
