A Walk in the Wild Side

Regardless the little water in the lagoons it is worth the visit to see the proud and elegant AVUTARDAS, the hawks and all kind of ducks. Bring binoculars and buy cheese in Tapioles or see the empty villages and the beautiful PALOMARES everywhere.

Interesting birds but opening times frustrating
Visited the Casa HQ and visitor centre of this reserve on a Sunday lunchtime. Like many Spanish nature reserves, even National ones like this, it has opening hours that are very frustrating for the visitor. Open only on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, it shuts for a siesta between 14:00 and 16:00 each day, when it is necessary to leave for 2 hours. On closed days a large gate shuts off the car park from the road. The reserve includes other areas of seasonal saltwater lagoon, and there is good signage to these and other areas of natural history interest. But even here one hide that we expected to find open the following day (Monday), from what we had been told, was secured with a large padlock and its upstairs viewing area was therefore inaccessible. Spain seems to take its nature conservation very seriously but treats its visitors shoddily at times. If you can get access to the reserve visitor centre it is well worth a visit and staff are helpful, interested and friendly.
