Palacio Real de La Granja de San Ildefonso, Castile and Leon, Spain

Magnificent!

The palace is truly stunning! As we went during the pandemic, it was near to empty so we had the luxury of truly walking around comfortably and taking everything in. Staff all have masks, there is hand sanitizer at the entrance and markings on the floor to keep distance when paying to enter. The garden area is so large, I don't know if you'd be able to see it all. It is gorgeous and relaxing. I would strongly recommend this stunning location.

    A guided live-streamed tour
I did a guided live-streamed tour of the gardens of La Granja Palace with Jesus from Heygo. He explained that this site was purchased from the monks in 1719 by King Philip V, to build a new palace and gardens modeled on Versailles which was built by his grandfather, Louis XIV of France. The French designer used the natural slope of the site in the palace grounds design, for enhancing axial visual perspectives. There are many lead sculptural fountains in the formal gardens and landscape park. These fountains are painted to look like bronze and marble. We took many lovely postcard shots of the gardens.

    Worth The Trip
Really enjoyed this & I’m surprised it doesn’t feature more highly in tourist guides of what to see & do in Segovia. It’s a 15 minute drive out of the centre, but well worth the effort in my opinion. Built in the early 1700’s for Philip V & apparently modelled to remind him of his grandfather’s French court, Versailles. It isn’t nearly as lavish or extensive as the house of loopy Louis of course, but is beautiful nevertheless. A fine looking Baroque Palace with most of its original frescoes intact. The magnificent gardens, full of sculptures & water fountains was designed by René Carlier, a disciple of Louis XIV’s architect. I enjoyed it despite this being an early February visit & the gardens not at their best. The water features weren’t operational & the ponds drained. Best to visit between April & mid-October when they are working for the full effect, but worthwhile regardless.
