New Cathedral (Catedral Nueva), Castile and Leon, Spain

4.5 (1.549 reviews) Spent Ranking #7 in Castile and Leon Historic Sites • Religious Sites

Magnificent

The New and Old Cathedrals are joined together but are quite different. The New one ( 16-18 century) is more opulent with gorgeous side altars and chapels and a Gothic-Baroque style. The dome is beautifully decorated as well as its facade — Flamboyant Gothic. It can be seen throughout Salamanca and is especially prominent at night when it is all lit up! Admission fee is 6 Euros (for two) and audio sets are provided.

It’s so big you can’t miss it!
The €6 entry fee brings you through the new cathedral and then into the old. It’s a really well organised one way system. There is an audio guide that you get a QR code for on entry. Each chapel etc is clearly marked so you can listen to the relevant information. The cathedral is massive! Remember at the entrance to look to your left for the astronaut and the dragon eating ice-cream. I enjoyed the ramble through the churches and was glad to get out of the heat.

    Amazing Cathedral!
Not to be missed if you are in Salamanca. An amazing Gothic/Baroque cathedral immediately adjoining the more reserved old cathedral. Fabulously decorated inside with many side chapels and altars plus brilliant stone carving on the exterior including an astronaut (obviously a relatively modern addition!)
