Cartuja de Miraflores, Castile and Leon, Spain

Just Amazing!

Miraflores was originally a hunting lodge built by King Enrique III at the beginning of the 15th century and then converted into a monastery by the Carthusian monks, who continue there today. The remarkable church is considered one of the principal monuments of the city of Burgos and contains a royal mausoleum that is the final resting place of King Juan II and his wife Queen Isabel, parents of Queen Isabel "La Catolica". Visitors can look forward to an extraordinary experience of silence, peace and beauty.

Edge of town gem! Don't miss this compact monastery full of amazing details
I walked from Burgos Cathedral to Cartuja de Miraflores and enjoyed the scenery. The monastery has been wonderfully restored and has succinct details which explain the history of Burgos, Spanish royalty, and the Carthusians. Rich with history but not overwhelming. Great staff as well. An unexpected gift - upon leaving the sanctuary and entering the courtyard, the monks began to sing their afternoon prayers. Gorgeous!

    Breathtaking art carvings
Hi Folks, please if you find this review helpful click on the helpful review link. Thanks a lot! If in or around Burgos this monastery is a must visit. Located near Burgos, a short drive by car, Cartuja de Miraflores is a sanctuary like no other. This is an actual Cartujos monks Monastery and the order is well alive. On this place work and live monks although you will be not able to see them since the order requires seclusion. Isabel la Catolica parents are buried here in a a magnificent alabaster carved tomb by Gil de Siloe, one of the greatest artist of that time. The altarpiece also by him and his brother it's a beautiful piece of art of unsurpassed complexity. There's also a museum with some amazing Dutch tapestry. The general atmosphere of this place is something really moving. There's no entrance fee just a donation deemed fair by yourself. Not so crowded, great to visit! Certainly a place to remember, highly recommendable.
