Salty history in lovely Essex

Over 4000 wooden ships have been built on the banks of the Essex River since 1668. The Essex Historical Society and Shipbuilding Museum traces the evolution of traditional boat building through artifacts, photographs, hands-on exhibits and tour guides with deep knowledge of maritime and local history. The School House building interprets ship models from the Smithsonian Institute.

    Great little place
We loved the hands-on and up-close experiences - both inside the museum and outside among the various buildings. It is a fascinating place and you can take your time to move through all of it. We lucked out to arrive just as they opened, prior to the tour bus group. Oh! And the staff is lovely and very knowledgeable.

    A Unique View of History
The quaint and rough looking property was steeped in Shipbuilding history. There are exhibits and projects that they are working on all around the site. The best part was a hands on demo of trunnel making were we each used a mallet to make the wooden nails they used at one time to build the ships in the 1850s. Then we experienced steam bending of oak. Up the street was their old school house with nice exhibits inside despite the rough look of the building on the outside. The old cemetery behind the school house was interesting. This was a really nice historical experience in Essex.
