Amazing collection

Amazing museum, definetly worth it. The photos online do not do it justice, I came with really low expectations but they have a marvelous collection, about every place on Earth is represented by music instruments, crafts, clothes. Also good explanatory texts in English. It is so valuable, I could spend hours there. And amazingly it was for free, I did not have to pay anything.

Fascinating exhibitions and lots to do
Just reopened in a new building, this is one of the best displays of 'world cultures' I've seen. The building looks small but underneath are huge exhibition spaces, and in the peaked roof, an interesting library and listening point open to all. There are two main parts. The permanent exhibition is free to enter and shows highlights of traditional life from all corners of the world; notably with Europe given equal coverage (truly 'world' coverage). These are big, object rich display cases that contain plenty to interest the specialist, but can also be enjoyed for its visual delights. Don't miss the two carved trees from Australia in the introductory section. The other exhibition area changes yearly and costs 9 CHF to enter (free for kids). In 2016 the exhibition is on the Amazon, and is superb. Delicate soundscapes and evocative rainforest backdrops showcase about 450 objects dating from the 18th century to today, relating to shamanism, hunting and other aspects of indigenous life. Lots of feather headresses. There is lots of information on the varied cultures, including films and recordings. One could spend a long time here. There are also many film showings, talks etc. Upstairs and open open on weekdays is an excellent anthropology library, with books (for all ages) on the shelves and about 90% that can be called from store. There is an upstairs gallery with listening stations for the museum's own, very large, collection of popular music from around the world. Also an excellent cafe on the ground floor and small shop. I think everyone would enjoy this museum, of any age. Do go!

    Great Visit
This has been recently refurbished by the looks of things. Contains many interesting exhibits, but more importantly some usefully updated information panels which makes it feel more modern. We spent a good couple of hours here, and also had some very good coffee and cake in the canteen. Definitely worth a visit.
