Lake Brienz, Canton of Bern, Switzerland

Picture of tranquility

A beautiful, calm and quiet lake with turquoise water. The ferry ride from Interlaken to Brienz on this lake is around an hour. The scenery is good, but not as dramatic as say lake Lucerne. There is a restaurant called Strandbad on the lake side in Brienz about 10 minutes walk from the station. Do try it, it is one of the most pleasurable eats that i had had for both the ambience and the food.

    Pleasant
The ferries are ageing but pleasantly outfitted. Eurailpass holders travel for free, and it's easy to connect from the Rothorn (steam mountain) railway at Brienz. One can also visit Iseltwald (as we did) - apparently it's famous due to some South Korean series that meant nothing to me. Staff were unobtrusive with the ferry mostly on time throughout the journey. In late October, there was no crowding, although all the dining area was occupied with rich Europeans. The lake is attractive: not quite as stunning as say Sydney Harbour, but not pedestrian either.

    Lovely waters
We spent a long weekend in the area and on a cold and drizzling afternoon we visited Lake Brienz. Its waters are turquoise, there is a lovely walk surrounding it and several art pieces scattered here and there on the way. I can only imagine that during the summer it becomes a heaven for water activities, although a local told me it's still rather cold. Definitely worth taking a look at.
