Exceptionally grand
With its standout red sandstone façade it is an architectural jewel. A centrepiece in the popular square, it has an esteemed history. Replacing an earlier one destroyed in the 1356 earthquake, it is beautifully ornate. An inner courtyard has an extravagance of frescos all relating tales of heroism and segments of history. The roof is tiled in multicolours. A fine tower rises on one side and is crowned with an exquisite turret.

One of the Great Town Halls of the Northern Renaissance
The Basel Town Hall or Rathaus is one of most beautiful and interesting such buildings in Europe. The red exterior with its golden spire, murals, carvings and coats of arms is about as photographic as these places can be. The good news is that the interior is equally outstanding with the wooden Swiss guard, many more murals and interesting things to photograph. Tours of all parts of the building are available on Saturday. This is a must visit while in Basel.

do visit if in Basel
The Basel Town Hall (Rathaus) is a historic - and colourful - building , more than 500 years old, located on the Market Square. There are guided tours, but even if you do not have the time to follow one of those or visit at a time no tour is offered, have a look around the inner courtyard of the building and the staircases. Everything has been meticulously restored, and for most of the wall paintings, sculptures etc., there are are bilngual panels describing the origins and history of the object....
