Excellent evocation of early medicines

As a tribute to the long history of pharmacies and medicines in the city, it’s incomparable. With leading global pharma companies such as Novartis and Roche headquartered here, it’s a fitting panegyric. Marvellous artefacts are displayed, from a complete olden pharmacy to multifarious medicines, powders, tinctures and elixir. Raw materials for many of these are shown, comprising plant, animal and mineral. In laboratories chemists and scientists experimented and toiled to produce hoped for improvements and cures for the ill. Distillation was a common technique, as was compounding using copious mortars and pestles.

Fabulous walk thru history of medicine as it pertains to the evolution of remedies and medications
The museum is best enjoyed and more informative if you use the audio gadget provided. It is well organized and has many well preserved examples of medicinal plants and what they were used for, metals, animal parts, an amazing periodic table of elements with samples of each, very old books with the recipes on how to make remedies, examples of alchemist labs and how they played a role in the development of medications and many more exhibits leading to modern times. The museum closed before I had a chance to view it all, but it is a treasure trove and they house quite an extensive collection. Probably not of too much interest to younger children unless they have an interest in the subject. If I lived in Basel I would probably frequent it more often.

    Surprising gem of a museum
This was a surprising gem of a museum. It seemed small but there was lots inside. The audio tour was really thorough and gave great history of the objects. Nothing too gross in there, really loved the talismans and glass jars. The ticket came with entry to the anatomical museum of the University of Basel so it was a great double deal. I would highly recommend.
