Small, free archaeological site
This small archaeological site was unearthed when a cinema was demolished to reveal the remains of houses and a street. The site is only open on certain days and when open there is a guide who will explain the site - and does this well. The site is small (but free) and well worth stopping at if open.

In need of some attention
Didn’t realise just how much there is in the way of Roman antiquity around Castro Urdiales and one might expect this to be the showcase - unfortunately you’d be wrong. The museum is down a sidestreet (Calle Ardigales) a block or so back from the port and from the outside you might be forgiven for thinking it’s derelict land as the exterior building looks aweful. Not sure if the museum was actually open when I walked past but as builders were there I slipped inside (although to be fair there are viewing windows). Information panels were dotted around but all in Spanish so I wasn’t able to work out what they were describing. It’s obvious some archeological work has been done to the floor area and there are some layouts to reflect how rooms might have been used back in the day. However, in my opinion a lot more needs to be done in order for the “museum” to properly reflect the towns ancient history. Interestingly, we’re staying in an apartment up from the town and you can follow the aqueduct route to where it flows from the hillside.
