Via Ferrata de Camaleno, Cantabria, Spain

Fantastic experience at Via Ferrata Camaleño

Five of us climbed with Oscar on May 24. Oscar was wonderful, he'll setup everything and makes the climb very easy. The views of Picos de Europa are spectacular. Make sure to visit Mogrovejo, very nice, typical Cantabria little town in the heart of the mountains. Is only five minutes away the climb. While you at it, have lunch at Meson Los Llanos while looking at the climb. Thank you Oscar, we really appreciate your guidance. Recommended to anyone in good physical shape, is not a difficult climb. José Lanza, Cocoa Beach, Florida, USA

    Spectacular fun in the Picos
My teenage daughter and her father thoroughly enjoyed an adventurous climb and the spectacular views. After renting equipment and a brief orientation from Oscar, the extremely helpful guide staffing the entrance, they enjoyed the challenging climb, in particularly crossing what was essentially a tightrope bridge.

Airy fun, great views, and free if you have your own gear
Great fun if you like a short adrenaline rush - and free if you have your own gear! If not you can rent at the hut in season - if it’s closed, ask in the neighbouring bar (meson los llanos). For my liking, there’s a bit too much ironwork - basically staples all the way + the Tibetan bridge. I would prefer some opportunities to actually climb/scramble - but great views. My kids (11 & 13) had a blast - they climb regularly indoors and have done the odd scramble/VF before - so found it straightforward. All done in about 90 mins round trip. Anyone with a head for heights should be ok - and very modest arm strength (if you can’t do say 5 pull ups, you might struggle with the reclipping on the slightly overhung bits). If you can do the short initial test section you should be fine all the way up. Towards the top, here’s a choice of the easy way, the airy Tibetan bridge, or the hard technical route which demands a dynamic move (best avoid if you don’t know what that is). Take a look at the route map on the notice board and it’s all clear. The bar landlady will explain also (in Spanish) if you need. Needless to say, if you haven’t done via Ferratas before, get a guide.
