Excellent adventure

A brief train ride I to this superb cave system and then on foot. I was in awe viewing the magnificent Stalagmites and Stalagtights in many different formations, colours and development. Well worth a visit if in the area.

    A very unique cave
A very interesting cave high in the mountains in Cantabria (near Santander). This was a former working mine, which produces lead and zinc. The cave is very novel for its unique formations and stalagmites and stalactites — some look like clouds and Christmas ornaments. There are also pools of water inside which reflect the ceilings. You have to be part of a tour which is only in Spanish but the guide might know some English if you have any queries. Unfortunately, photos are not allowed.

    A unique cave
We've been to el Soplao a few times, and it's really worth a visit. The caves are nothing like the others in Cantabria, nothing like Altamira, there are no paintings, it's the formations which are the attraction, they're totally unique and noone knows exactly how they're formed. When we've been before we've just done the normal guided tour (with the train into the cave and the tour), which was great, but this time we decided to do the adventure tour, and it was fantastia great experience. It's quite expensive, 30 Euros or so I think, and you need to book ahead, but it's worth it. You get dressed up in overalls and boots and hats with lights and they take you right into the cave, past the normal visiting area, to see more formations, and have the "lights out" experience. Some parts were quite wet and slippery and there were a few bits where you had to slide down slopes or up/down ropes and stairs, wouldn't recommend this tour for everyone (the normal one is fine), but that made it all the more fun. Make sure you leave enough time to get there, it takes longer from the motorway than you think and you have to collect the tickets 30 mins before, we've been caught out before with that.
