Colegiata de Santillana del Mar

The Collegiate church and cloister of St Juliana is a fine example of Romanesque architecture and can be found in the historic centre of Santillana del Mar. The building has a magnificent dome, transept, and tower. While the exterior has fine examples of archivolts not just on arches, but on windows too. Well worth a visit along with Museo de Altamira. It's just a shame the building is on the verge of falling into ruin due to lack of maintenance.

Romanesque Church from the 12th Century!
This is a beautiful church built in the 12th century. It is a Romanesque style temple with three naves and a magnificent tower. It also hosts a cloister, but I could not see it. I went to the Collegiate for mass at 8.00 p.m. The priest was really nice and friendly.

    Romanesque Beauty
The Collegiate Church of Santillana del Mar is worth the 3 euro entry fee simply to walk through it's cool environs. However, there is much more. The cloister is packed with intricately carved columns capitals depicting religious allegories. The church itself features a 15th century altar piece showing scenes from the martyrdom of Saint Juliana, for whom the town is named. The organ and choir area is also a good example of fine craftsmanship. There is also the stone tomb for the remains of Saint Juliana. If you don't have any Spanish skills, do a little homework before arrival to make the most of your visit. And take your time strolling through here in search of the little gems that abound.
