Excellent guided tour of an important archaeological site

Cueva Pintada, after which the site was named, was discovered in the mid 19th century and is part of a group of artificial caves excavated in the volcanic rock.. Its geometrical motifs make it the most unique representation of the Pre-Hispanic wall paintings, an exceptional testimony of the artistic and symbolic expression of the people of the Canary Islands. Excavations made here since 1987 until today have confirmed the fact that Cueva Pintada used to be part of a village with over fifty houses and artificial caves dating back from the 6th to the 16th centuries. The remains of the indigenous village of Cueva Pintada can be admired from a walkway surrounding those structures preserved, which allows visitors to look at the detail of the houses and indigenous caves.

Excellent guided tour of an important archaeological site
This visit should be booked on line and you take a guided tour which lasts a little over an hour. The guided tour shows you a video as background, then you see artefacts unearthed on the site - and then you enter a vast archaeological site with the remains of huts, cooking areas and caves inhabited by the pre-hispanic inhabitants of the island. The highlight is the painted cave itself and the guide provides a detailed and interesting presentation of this extraordinary site. A number of huts have been reconstructed and you can enter these at the end of the tour. For me a must see!

A worthy visit right in town centre
Right in the centre of town and its laid out very well with walkways over the archaeology site. Staff knowledgeable and although you go into a climate / light controlled area to see the cave painting that is the only time that guide hurry you along. A film presentation in English (& other languages). Plenty of space to view objects found and I love the story of how farmer came across site. A fantastic gift shop that holds plenty of ideas for a momento or two.
