Ecofinca Platanologico, Canary Islands, Spain

Fantastic place and people

We visited just before the volcano eruption and I never got around to writing a review. However I have since learned that the ecofinca has been severely damaged by the eruption which is such a shame. Fran and his team are some of the nicest, passionate most genuine people that my husband and I have met on our travels. We had a wonderful morning learning about the bananas and the ecofinca. We wish them all the best in their rebuilding efforts. If you find yourself in the area, please do pay them a visit or help out if you can to help regenerate this gem of a place.

    Very interesting visit!
I was at Platanologico last week and it was a really interesting and nice visit. The owner is a very good person, knows a lot about ecological agriculture and has many ideas. We learnt more about the banana plant, could taste some fruits and also saw some other plants like sugar cane and papaya. I really enjoyed the visit and would recommend it very much!

A visit is essential if you're on La Palma
We took the tour today and were very impressed with both Fran, our guide, and the set-up of the little banana plantation. You need to book in advance, which we did by email. We parked near what we thought was the entrance, but there were directions on the door taking us around the outskirts of the Hotel Sol to another door, so it's worth getting there a little bit early just to make sure you're in the right place. The tour group was made up of German and English people and Fran did the tour in very good English. We were shown round the plantation and Fran explained how the bananas are grown, how they use organic principles to farm and what difference this makes to the environment. We saw the farm animals and fed the ducks and got to sample bananas at the end of the tour. It was really interesting, I highly recommend a visit, it'll answer all the questions you have about banana farming - and you'll have a lot of questions, the plantations are all over the island and you can't drive anywhere without seeing one! Fran is a great guide, very funny and entertaining and happy to answer questions and go off on a tangent about widlife - we saw some Monarch butterfly caterpillars while we were there and he told us a lot about their habitat and life cycle. You'll come away thinking differently about bananas and maybe be a bit more selective about your food purchases in the supermarket. Very thought-provoking!
