Tijuana River National Estuarine Research Reserve, California, United States

4.5 (56 reviews) Spent 1-2 hours Ranking #2 in Imperial Beach Bodies of Water • Nature & Wildlife Areas • Educational sites

Quiet and secluded

Walked along the beach boundary. So quiet and secluded. Even on a weekend it was quiet and very lightly attended. Great place to walk and view.

Wonderful gem. Great place to spend several hours in tranquility!
The Tijuana River collects from a watershed that spans the US/Mexico border. The river flows into the Pacific just north of the border. To the immediate south is Borderfield State Park; to the north is the Tijuana River National Estuarine Research Reserve, which is part of the national estuarine reserve system. The reserve has a nice Visitor Center and a set of easy hiking trails. Because this is an estuary, the terrain is flat. There is an abundance of California native plants, local and migrating birds, rabbits, lizards, and other critters. The western edge of the reserve is beachfront, accessible only on foot so near deserted. This is a relaxing and beautiful place to spend several hours. It is less well-known than the Torrey Pines Nature Reserve or Mission Trails Regional Park (both also great places to visit), and much less crowded.

    Very Interesting & Educational
We walked a few of the trails. They have nice sitting benches along the route so you can sit & watch the wildlife. Really peaceful & relaxing. Several information plaques around the area that gives you a lot of information about what you are seeing along with descriptions for many of the birds located in the area. If you are in the area spend an hour or two taking a walk in this area.
