Sea Goddess Whale Watching, California, United States

Whales and dolphins . . . oh my!

The staff was great, personable, informative, friendly and efficient. Everyone seemed to enjoy their job and were all totally engaged. There was a storm coming in so the water was "rough" but our captain maneuvered through the water easily. Personally I thoroughly enjoyed our ocean rollercoaster ride! Unfortunately the staff had to take care of quite a few seasick people but did so professionally. The additional $20/person charge for going up top is well worth the cost. From the top deck you can sit comfortably on a bench or navigate easily to either side when whales or dolphins choose to make an appearance. And appear they did! I also feel it's important to note that the boat was maintained beautifully! This is an adventure I hope to do again and the Sea Goddess will again be our first choice!

    Gray whales
We saw at least 5 gray whales with them spouting, tail flipping and parts of their backs. It was exciting. The whales were a ways away for safety so I recommend a good zoom lense. Also this time of year the boat had to go 13 miles south to find the whales so be prepared for 45 minutes just boating to see the whales and then the same time back. The weather was glorious sun for us and we enjoyed the boat ride. Do wear a hat, gloves and coat to keep warm. There was bottled water for sale inside the cabin. We saw plenty from the lower deck.

    So many humpbacks!
Honestly, I had a great experience! We saw so many humpback whales only 5-10 mins after setting sail, and they kept resurfacing around us for about 60-90 mins thereafter. From the videos I've shared, it seems we were quite lucky on that day to get so close to them. The marine biologists/hosts were really knowledgeable and kept everyone engaged with where the whales' locations anytime one surfaced. I'm giving 4 stars because it does seem like a varied experience based in luck. You should know that you're not guaranteed a full 3 hours. Our trip was right around 2 hours, but in our case, we saw so many whales that it didn't negatively affect our experience. Obviously, you're sailing in the bay so don't be surprised if the fog rolls in and the trip gets cut short or visibility is affected. No horror stories about passengers getting seasick on our trip! We went on a Friday 9:30am excursion, and the water was mostly calm, but pick up some dramamine in case you're worried. Also, it's definitely not worth it to pay for the VIP section unless your boat is quite full/at max capacity. In our case, our boat was not at max capacity so there was plenty of room for those of us in the bottom to move freely along the boat to catch some good views. Ps. We got the groupon- redemption was very simple/quick.
