Nicely-designed Museum and Great Special Exhibit Space
The deYoung's strength is not in its permanent collection, but in the architecture and the special exhibit space/special exhibits themselves. They do an excellent job of staging exhibits that are easy to navigate, accommodate large crowds, and highlight not only the artwork but the artists and the thought that went into the works. This Fall's special exhibit is Judy Chicago: A Retrospective. I was simply blown away. It is the best special exhibit I've seen in years. Not having been familiar with her work, it was both an educational experience and a visual delight. As always, the deYoung displays the work flawlessly and does an excellent job of telling the history and story behind the works. Very rarely do I see an exhibit more than once, but I will make another trip to San Francisco to see this. It was THAT good.

Beautiful building with beautiful art
I took my young son. It’s a beautiful building with beautiful art inside, it was a bit difficult to manage a young child and keep him interested but there was a lot of space thanks to the limited capacity and timed entry. Definitely come with time to take it all in, I wasn’t able to enjoy it as much while trying to entertain a 10 month old, possible, but probably better as an adult only trip.
