Upper Fall Trail carpeted with Bear Clover
The trail to Upper Chilnualna Fall is fairly consistent in its gradient, about 600’ per mile. But this is a great trail if you like bear clover, also called Mountain Misery. It was in bloom for our early June hike and was lovely to see. There are numerous views of Wawona from the trail as well as views of the cascades of the waterfall. Note that there are some open unshaded sections of the trail, so we got pretty hot. A highlight for me was seeing a baby rattlesnake along the trail. I am afraid it is too close to people, but I did not try to pick it up and move it to a more unpopulated location. While at the top, we picnicked with a view, checked out campsites, took lots of photos, and admired all the cascades. We did not choose to swim in any of the potholes or pools of water. Note that the Lower Chilnualna Fall Trail is short & somewhat steep but ‘worth’ the walk. The Upper Fall Trail is definitely a hike rather than a walk.

Upper falls - worth the hard hike
If you are a hiker this is worth the trip. Sure it gets steep and there are plenty of switchbacks, but that’s why we come here. It’s nowhere near as crowded as some of the hikes around the valley. Filter some cold water at the top of the falls and kick back for lunch with a great view. Plunge into the deep pools at the top of the falls to cool off in a hurry. Definitely worth the hike if you’ve got the legs for it.

Find your way here!
Having been to Yosemite many, many times, I am always looking for something new and different. This was it! The road to the trailhead took me to an area of Yosemite where I had never been before. The hike to the lower falls was reasonably easy! We didn't go very far up the steps as my wife wasn't really up for them. Nonetheless a nice short hike!
