Cable Cars, California, United States

Amazing

Since 1873, cable cars have run up and down the hilly city, though after the 1950s, these cars have been kept in operation more out of historic nostalgia. Seventeen miles of track remain and have been deemed a historical landmark.

    Fun Experience
Fun way to get around San Francisco. Rides are $8 one way. You can buy a day or multi-day pass to save on ride costs. Recommend get a pass/ticket in advance. You can also use the Clipper pass in cell phone wallet. We rode all three lines. It is neat to watch the conductors manually turn the cars at the end of the lines (2 of the three lines have round wood turn around points). You can get from Fisherman's Wharf to China Town or to the Ferry Building as well as lots of points in between and back. The conductors are friendly, and you can ask them where the stops are to make sure you are on the correct line. Some conductors make it more fun than others. Be prepared to travel up and down the hills. Cars have indoor and outdoor seating as well as standing rails. Highly recommend riding at least once for the experience.

    Good fun
We tried to book tickets through the Muni website but as foreigners (non US credit card, no paypal working) it was impossible to buy on this site. We bought from the ticket booth instead but as it was USD8 for a single ride this was no use. We ended up taking a 3 days pass as this was USD36 and we could use it as much as we wanted and also valid for other transportation in the city. The cable cars 3 lines are supposed to run every 15 minutes, but it seems not to be really the case, so be careful to have a enough time as it is not the quickest way on transportation. It is however good fun and a really nice way to see the city. As we had the 3 days pass we used it quite a bit between the different lines. If you are standing you see much better than from the inside or if sitting on the benches.
