Casa Natal de Julio Cortazar, Brussels, Belgium

For literature and architecture lovers

Apart from looking up at the second floor of the house where Argentine writer Julio Cortázar was born on August 26, 1914 and reading the commemorative plaque next to the entrance there isn’t much to do here because the house is not open to the public. Cortázar only lived here for a very short time anyway because his family moved to Switzerland to flee the war. But just opposite the house, under the trees lining Avenue Lepoutre, there is a rather tormented-looking bust of Cortázar (1914 – 1984) by Argentinian sculptor Edmund Valladares on a high pedestal (2005), which is worth a glance. Avenue Lepoutre, off Place Brugmann, can easily be reached by taking tram 92 (Fort-Jaco) on Rue Royale or at Louise to ‘Darwin’. From there a short stroll along Rue Darwin takes you directly to Place Brugmann. Architecture lovers should not miss the opportunity to explore this pleasant residential area of Brussels boasting several listed buildings of various styles.
