Sun Peaks, British Columbia, Canada

4.5 (1.221 reviews) Spent More than 3 hours Ranking #2 in Sun Peaks Ski & Snowboard Areas

We've been here twice and will be back again!

Sun Peaks is a beautiful ski resort and we ski here regularly, having found that the terrain is suitable for all the family- from the novice to the expert who wants to ski off piste all day. There are areas for all skiers or snowboarders, a terrain park and Sun Peaks is less busy than Whistler, Three Valleys, Haute Savoie. A new faster chair lift has been installed since our last pre-Covid trip, and now RFID passes, which can be bought online and auto topped up. The ski/snowboard school is helpful and friendly. There are several places to stop for lunch including the Sunburst Lodge (top of Sunburst Lift) & Masas Grill & the Annexe (bottom of main lifts), or walk into the village for Oya (authentic and amazing Japanese). Our suggestion... buy your lift passes in advance! If you buy an adult pass on the day it is $136... This seems expensive given that a Whistler adult day pass is $153 and Sun Peaks is now more expensive than Europe! In advance the Sun Peaks adult pass comes down to $82. If you are planning winter skiing and summer hiking, then definitely buy a season's pass. The pass gives you a discount (outside of peak) to ski other BC resorts. Overall, Sun Peaks is a lovely place to ski/snowboard, however not inexpensive!

    The Best Kept Secret
We came here with friends who have been coming for the last couple of years with our children with an age range of 4 years old to 15 years old. Ours had never been or hadn’t been for some time probably 10 years since our last ski trip and all of them would come back next year over the standard sun holiday! We were in the East Village walking down to the day lodge is easy enough and there is a shuttle bus too except from 10am & 2pm. Easy enough to do and so helpful with children and ski’s. In the resort there is so much help if you need or ask for it! The ski instructors were brilliant and the children all progressed very quickly skiing confidently and with no accidents just the odd wipe out as they got more daring on our watch not the instructors! The piste from base level skiing to our more adventurous friends was grand there was something for everyone even the grandparents were hitting the slopes and having a ball! I think if you’re wanting to book lessons do it when you get here, our tour operator was a little keen and the jet lag killed the first day. Booking in resort you’ve got more opportunity to book to each persons needs I would definitely do this next time or you can just get going alone! I had a private lesson and it was the best decision for me and it got me going again without doubt I would do the same again next time after such a long break! On my third day I accepted defeat after much agony and got some hire boots the people in the rental shop. They couldn’t have been more helpful and the new boots completely altered my ski experience bearing in mind it had been 10 years a couple of children later and my boots were probably a bit redundant! Bottoms the restaurant/Bar have looked after us well on the feeding and watering front. The store is well stocked but if you want to self cater for the duration a grocery delivery would be best advised and delivery to your accommodation is easily arranged. The pizza delivery was also a firm favourite! We’ve loved it here and if I was looking to relocate it would be here without doubt! I would love to come back in the summer to see the other side of the resort. I would choose Sun Peaks over European ski completely. But sssssh don’t tell everyone as is the mantra of most of us that love Sun Peaks!!

We've been here twice and will be back again!
We visited the Sun Peaks resort January 2023 and had a great time. We had previously visited in 2009 and much has changed but the relaxed atmosphere and friendly people have not. While much larger than 14 years ago, the village itself still feels quaint and like you’ve stepped into a little section of Europe. Restaurants and shops nestled in every nook and cranny and hotels and places to stay on top of all of those. They’ve added more amenities on the west end by the Burfield chair but the majority of the shops/restaurants are still in the main village. Complimentary shuttle service can take you to the places out of reasonable walking distance too. There is food for every appetite. Quick grab and go places, pub fare and higher end dining should you wish such a thing. Japanese, Mexican can be found here. Also, lots of treats to satisfy your sweet tooth. We had a soft spot for Baby Doh’s for sure! Prices are what you would expect. Higher than your normal restaurant/store. Some deals to be had, the Cahilty has an excellent apres menu from 3-5pm every day. Honestly though, if you are going there and expecting to pay the same or less than anywhere else you might as well pass on coming here. It is what it is, prepare for it and the sticker shock won’t be so bad. Travel to Whistler or Blue Mountain or any ski resort and you’ll find the same. If you can grab your groceries in Kamloops before heading up the mountain its cheaper, but the Bluebird market can fill in with a decent selection of food. Pricy yes, but again expected. Bluebird did have the option to purchase single serving syrups and spreads which was nice. That was cheaper than buying a whole jar in the city and being wasteful. There has been a ton of residences and such added, more people staying overall but for skiing its never ever crowded. We overheard on the Sunday we skied that it was the busiest day that Sun Peaks had in nearly 4 years. At the main lifts we might have waited 15 minutes to get on a chair, and that would be stretching it. Once dispersed on the 3 mountains wait times were cut significantly on weekends and almost non-existent on week days. The skiing is great, lots of variety of runs and something for all abilities. Weather is typically sunny as the name suggests and the snow conditions and grooming also great for the most part. I would love to come back to Sun Peaks sometime in the summer and experience the hiking/biking etc.. They are constantly improving and adding and providing more services, all while maintaining small town, unpretentious and welcoming atmosphere. A destination that we’ll be back to for sure!
