Quick stroll, don’t venture too far east
Having heard from friends about this area, read many reviews and glancing through the area on a sightseeing bus, we knew we had to make a Gastown stop but steer clear of the DTES of it. It is a quaint neighbourhood with cute shops and cobblestone but it was just shockingly heartbreaking to see the juxtaposition of the wealth of downtown against the DTES. We did a quick (and hyper alert!) late afternoon stroll on Water Street only as we did not wish to venture too far, especially with a toddler in tow. Many souvenir shops to peruse through, bustling with people, would recommend an hour or so just to soak it in.

Could have been a nice visit
Very disappointed with “Gastown” area of Vancouver. It was much smaller than I thought on the was we had to pass through some very depressed streets with tent villages on the sidewalks the smell of urine and people shooting up and lighting up in the streets - some cute shops and restaurants but in general i we were not impressed . Like most cities the Mayor and city counsel need to do a much better job addressing drug use and those who are living on the streets.
